The Real Role of CRAC In a data center, cooling is not just lowering temperature, it’s about controlling airflow with precision.

At the center is the CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioning) unit, responsible for temperature, humidity, and air distribution inside the white space.

What is inside CRAC ?

Inside the CRAC Unit Inside the CRAC, components work together. Hot return air passes over cooling coils with refrigerant to remove heat. An inverter compressor adjusts capacity based on load, improving efficiency. Humidifiers and dehumidifiers control moisture to prevent static or condensation, while fans push conditioned air back. How Cooling Happens The process is continuous. The CRAC supplies cold air, often into a raised floor plenum, creating pressure beneath the floor. This air rises through perforated tiles into the data hall. Hot vs Cold Aisle Airflow is managed using the cold aisle / hot aisle layout. Cold air is delivered to the front of servers, passes through equipment absorbing heat, and exits into the hot aisle. This separation prevents mixing. The Airflow Journey Air follows a loop. It leaves the CRAC, moves under the floor, rises into the cold aisle, passes through servers, and exits as hot air into the hot aisle. Then it returns to the CRAC to be cooled again. Why Airflow Matters CRAC units don’t just cool, they control temperature, humidity, and airflow as one system. Without proper airflow management, hot and cold air mix, causing inefficiency.
